Knowledge Graph & Entity SEO

Authority & Off-Page

TL;DR

Search and AI engines first work out WHICH business a page belongs to — an entity in a knowledge graph such as Google's Knowledge Graph or Wikidata. A brand that resolves to an entity is easier to trust and to cite.

Explain Simply

A knowledge graph is a giant address book of real things: companies, people, places. If your business has a card in that book, with your website written on it, Google and ChatGPT know exactly who you are when they read your page.

An entity is a uniquely identified thing — Vinamilk the company, not the word "vinamilk". Google's Knowledge Graph holds billions of entities and powers the Knowledge Panel; Wikidata is the open knowledge graph that Google, Bing and large language models all read. Each entity carries facts: official website, logo, founding date, social profiles, and links to Wikipedia articles.

Entity SEO means making the link between your site and your entity explicit and consistent. On your site: Organization JSON-LD with name, url, logo and a sameAs array that lists your official profiles — including your Wikidata item and Wikipedia article when they exist. Off your site: the same name, address and phone everywhere, a Google Business Profile, and coverage in independent sources.

A Wikidata item is not a marketing listing. Create one only when independent, reliable sources describe the business (Wikidata's notability rule); an item without sources gets deleted.

⚡Why It Matters

AI Overviews, Copilot and ChatGPT ground their answers in entities. When a page resolves to a known entity, the engine can check claims against the graph and cite the page with more confidence. Google's Knowledge Panel and brand rich results also require a Knowledge Graph entity.

🔍How CiteStat Checks

CiteStat looks up the domain on Wikidata (by the official-website property, then by the brand name in your Organization markup, and only counts an item whose official website is this domain) and, where enabled, in Google's Knowledge Graph Search API. When an entity exists, CiteStat compares the profiles it lists with your Organization sameAs and names the missing ones.
